In May 2002, the International Labor Organization (ILO) published the results of a research project conducted in the Guatemala City Dump among the scavenger population. This report was entitled “Investigating the worst forms of Child Labor—Child Labor in the Garbage Dump: A Quick Evaluation.”
One paragraph from the report highlights the work of Potter's House Association among those who live and work in the dump: “Among the NGO’s most recognized by the people that work in the dump, Potter’s House Association stands above. More than half (58%) of the people interviewed stated that personnel from this organization have assisted them at least one time.” By comparison, other organizations are cited by 19%, 12%, or 8% of the people interviewed (page 13).
The report is available in Spanish online at www.ilo.org/public/spanish/standards/ipec/simpoc/guatemala.
