As Potter's House Association works with the Treasures who live and work in the Guatemala City dump, there are five strategic programs that help break the cycle of poverty.
Personal Development
Through personal development, Potter's House Association provides opportunities to cultivate leadership skills and encourages participation in finding solutions to community problems. Instead of handing solutions to those who live and work in the dump, Potter's House strives to empower them to take ownership of the problem and build solutions that will break the cycle.
Education
Through various education programs, Potter's House Association offers support to equip shape the lives of children from elementary school through university. Christian principles and values are taught in addition to academic subjects to provide a holistic approach to the education and learning of children living in the dump. Services also include after-school enrichment activities and parenting classes for the families.
Health
Unsanitary conditions in the dump afford many opportunities to care for the physical health of those who live and work there. Potter's House Association provides medical attention, treating illnesses and injuries and offering support if serious illness strikes. In addition, Potter's House provides education in the basics of disease prevention and personal hygiene.
Micro-Enterprise
For those with an entrepreneurial spirit, we have a micro-enterprise program. In conjunction with our partners, Potter's House Association is able to provide financial resources and guidance. This enables small business owners to grow their businesses and increase their income in order to improve their lives and the lives of their families. Some businesses may also have the opportunity to provide jobs and a better life for others.
Community Support
Through community support, Potter's House Association is able to provide support during especially difficult times. Services include a nutritional program which provides a hot meal to school children; the distribution of food, clothes, shoes and other essentials to families in need; immediate assistance in times of emergency, such as fire and other natural disasters; and community projects that are often taken on by our partners, like new homes, cement floors and sidewalks, stoves, etc.
