One of the greatest opportunities we as God's people have to allow His life to continue to define ours is to experience first-hand what it means to serve the "least of these." To walk a mile in someone else's shoes can dramatically alter your perspective and allow you to see the world as God sees it with a bit more clarity.
Potter's House Association's partners who visit our campus and spend time with the Treasures are forever changed. Not only do they get to share the love of God in tangible ways, but they often find that they come into direct contact with God's love and grace in their own lives. Some realize with greater passion and zeal what God calls each of us to do in caring for the "least of these" and others are overwhelmed with gratitude for God's mercy and provision in their own lives. Whatever your specific experience, you will not visit and be unchanged.
Our partner volunteers are a blessing both to the Treasures and to Potter's House Association, as it is only with their help that we could exist and accomplish the things that God has laid out for us to do.
We believe that it is only by the prompting of the Lord that our partners choose to come and work with the poor in the Guatemala City dump. It is never an act of guilt or compulsion, but the working of God in the lives of the individuals who come. For that reason, we know that God is faithful to honor that choice—both for the Treasures and for our partners.
Many international volunteers report that Potter's House is logistically one of the easiest ministries with which to serve on a short-term basis:
- Guatemala City is only a 2-1/2 hour flight from both Dallas and Miami. The local time is Central Standard Time (U.S. Central in the winter and U.S. Mountain during Daylight Saving Time). No Visa is required for U.S. and Canadian citizens.
- Potter's House Association has tried and tested relationships with secure and trusted suppliers of both lodging and transportation. We have hosted many groups, so we are also accustomed to the special dietary needs of international visitors; we use only trusted sources for both food and beverages.
- Staff members are assigned to volunteers and groups and work with them throughout their visit. You will be our guest and a true partner in ministry.
- Our campus includes special facilities for the convenience of our international volunteers, including a group meeting room, lockers for valuables and broadband Internet access.
- Many U.S. mobile phone service providers work in Guatemala City. We have specific experience with Sprint®, but we know that others work as well.
- We are also happy to work with you to arrange a cultural side-trip during your visit. While we know that your primary objective is ministry, we believe that knowing more about our beautiful country, including its culture, people, and traditions, can greatly enhance your ministry experience.
